National Pet Week

Pets have profound effects on the lives of their human owners. They provide us with love, endless hours of companionship, and wonderful relationships that help fill our our lives. National Pet Week is a celebration of those relationships. Being a pet owner is not just fun and games. Being a responsible pet owner requires that your pet’s health is properly cared for. Information on the health of your pet is included here, but make sure to talk with your veterinarian about your particular situation. “National Pet week” was jointly founded by the American Veterinary Medical Association (Schaumburg, Ill.) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA, to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine. The Auxiliary to the AVMA is celebrating “Pets and People—Healthy Together”. The Auxiliary chose this year’s theme to promote the importance of exercise for people and pets, said Ginger Morton, the Auxiliary’s vice president for public relations. The purpose of National Pet Week is to foster responsible pet ownership, recognize the human-animal bond, and increase public awareness of veterinary medicine. The AVMA and Auxiliary founded the event in 1981, and the celebration has spread throughout the United States. The AVMA continues to support the event. For more information see petweek.org.
