While rescuers at shelters nationwide are able to tell the approximate age of the animals that arrive at their adoption centers, the actual birth dates of the these pets are often unknown. To give these wonderful animals their much deserved recognition, the North Shore Animal League America declares the first day of the eighth month of the year – August 1st – as DOGust the 1st, a universal birthday for shelter and rescued dogs everywhere.
