The statewide event will feature more than 150 and counting California animal welfare organizations offering free adoptions to find homes for 2,024 shelter pets. Due to a severe statewide shortage of veterinary professionals, many areas of California do not have access to veterinary care in their communities. This lack of access to care—specifically spay/neuter services—combined with a confluence of other factors, such as inflation and housing restrictions, have led to a huge influx in animals being brought into shelters in recent years. California Adopt-A-Pet Day is being managed by CalAnimals, while being supported by the SF SPCA and the ASPCA, the latter of which is providing funds to cover the cost of free adoptions at participating shelters. A full list of participating shelters can be found at caadoptapetday.org.
