"Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine Research". Tufts is looking for subjects for a study of thyroid replacement therapy for canine behavior problems. This dog behavior study is looking for dogs that are aggressive to their owners and also have a thyroid problem. The double-blind study will focus on borderline cases, dogs that have normal thyroid levels but are in the bottom 20th percentile of the normal thyroid hormone level range. Half of these dogs will receive thyroid hormone supplements that will bring them to the upper part of the normal range and the other half will receive a placebo. The study will then assess if treating the thyroid problem decreases the aggressive behavior. The study lasts for 8 weeks. The first two weeks are a baseline phase when the owners count the number of aggressive episodes that occur per day and document them on a form. Then the dog’s aggressive behavior is monitored again for the next 6 weeks after dog gets the supplement. The participants can be from any part of the country and do not have to bring the dogs to Tufts Animal Behavior Clinic in order to participate. In order to qualify, a dog must be aggressive (growl, lift a lip, snarl or bite) to a human family member 4 - 5 times/week, and not be currently being treated for a thyroid condition. Please contact Nicole Cottam, Behavior Service Coordinator, at 508-887-4802 (nicole.cottam@tuft.edu) for more information.

"Marin Humane Society seeks foster homes for animals in need - Take good care of our babies! The Marin Humane Society is currently looking for foster care volunteers who can “take good care of our babies” until they are ready to enter the MHS adoption program. Foster homes offer a temporary environment for animals to work on behavior issues or rehabilitate after injury or illness, and provide a safe place for kittens and puppies to grow. On average, more than 30% of adoption animals at MHS benefit from time in a foster home. Fostering is a wonderful way to experience the joy of caring for a companion animal without making a long-term commitment. Volunteers bear no out-of-pocket expenses. The Marin Humane Society furnishes all necessary supplies and provides routine and emergency veterinary care; foster parents supply the love. The Marin Humane Society is in need of a several types of foster homes, including: Behavior fosters - Behavior foster homes afford dogs the opportunity to get beyond a particular issue that would otherwise make it difficult for them to be adopted. Medical fosters - Medical foster homes are crucial for giving animals the time they need to heal away from the stress of a kennel. Whelping fosters - Whelping fosters provide care for dogs through their pregnancy. For more information about becoming a foster care volunteer, please call MHS foster care coordinator Samantha Pascoe at (415) 506-6235.

March 23

"National Puppy Day," all day, everywhere. Help us Save 10,000 homeless puppies across the nation on March 23rd! National Puppy Day is not only a day to celebrate the puppies in our lives, for how much joy, unconditional love and friendship they offer us, but to acknowledge the great need that many homeless puppies have for a loving and forever home and to educate the public about animal cruelty. Often puppies are given as holiday gifts and by this time of year, their novelty has worn off. Holiday echoes of children's excited promises to walk the puppy, clean up after him and feed him, have fallen by the wayside... resulting in abandonment, as mom and dad are too busy to pick up the slack. "It's a puppy" they say. "I'm sure someone will want him!" And off to the shelter he goes. Puppies come in all shapes and sizes and on National Puppy Day, you can expect to find homeless puppies between the ages of 5 to 12 months old in shelters all over the U.S. Shelters are full of them all year round... so won't you pick up where someone else left off? A puppy is virtually a clean slate to train and mold into the perfect pet! It's bad enough imagining an adult dog being euthanized due to lack of human interest....but a beautiful, cuddly, viable puppy? Now that's a pure heartbreaker! If you're a shelter or rescue organization, you can hold a fun event to help encourage local animal lovers to adopt. If you're just an animal lover, take the initiative to partner with a local animal shelter and host an adoption event in your town ....or if you're a business, become a sponsor of National Puppy Day by having your own event and reap the rewards of exposure to not only your local neighbors, but over 1.5 million visitors a month to the National Puppy Day site and enjoy the community credibility of participating in this worthy life saving holiday. April ? (last week of April)

"National Scoop the Poop Week" Starting the day after "National Sense of Smell Day" comes "National Scoop the Poop week". With the popularity of dogs increasing so has the problems of dog waste. Most city dwellers have seen and perhaps even smelled, a winters' accumulation of dog waste in such common areas as school yards, parks, alleys and even on sidewalks. With so many dog owners not cleaning up it has become more than a minor inconvenience. In addition to being unsightly, canine waste not only attacks our senses with offensive odors, but attracts rodents and insects (which carry their own diseases), and worse, leaves humans and their dogs vulnerable to the threat of salmonella, worms and parasites who unknowingly come into contact with the waste. There are not only potential health risks involved but also environmental issues that need to be addressed. When dog waste is not picked up and properly disposed of, it can wash into nearby bodies of water or carried by runoff into lakes and streams, untreated dog waste can become a significant source of runoff pollution. A second environmental issue to consider is the use of plastic bags when picking up after our dogs. Plastic takes on average 300 years to degrade. Plastic bags that are used also tend to end up in municipality sewer systems, blocking the system. There are now many biodegradable alternatives available. The Centers for Disease Control recommends cleaning up after your pet at least once a week. Taking precautionary safety measures and disposing of your dogs waste can prevent infections in both humans and their dogs.

"Alternative Approaches to Healing Canine Health and Behavior, with Nicole Wilde," 9:00am-4:30pm, Woodfin Hotel, 5800 Shellmound St, Emeryville (between Oakland and Berkeley). Most of us are familiar with treating canine health issues through traditional veterinary medicine, and behavior problems with training and behavior modification. But there are other useful modalities that can be used in conjunction with those treatments. Why limit the good you can do for dogs? Come and learn about some fascinating alternative approaches to healing canine health and behavior. The morning session begins with an informative overview of how vibrational, energy-based healing methods work. We'll then focus on specific ways in which flower essences, music, and color can affect dogs. For example, did you know that the Bach Flower Essence "Beech" can help dogs who are intolerant of other dogs, or that the Masters Essence "Grape" is excellent for dogs who have been abandoned or abused? Or that the color red can stimulate the appetite, while blue can be very calming? You will receive extensive handouts, hear about research studies, and participate in a group exercise on how to choose the proper flower essences to address specific behavior issues. The afternoon is dedicated to the emerging field of hands-on energy healing. You will learn simple, effective techniques to rebalance a dog's energy and to clear blockages. A dog whose energies are in balance will experience improved health and display better behavior. You will see, in video segments of hands-on healing sessions with dogs, the types of effects that are possible with this type of treatment. In the extensive experiential portion, you will be taught to sense and move energy--no previous experience is necessary! Through practice with fellow attendees, you will learn practical applications for working with your own dogs and others.
You'll learn how energy healing can calm dogs in a variety of situations, and how it can help with health issues, as well as behavior issues such as fear and aggression. Even those who are deeply skeptical have come away from this seminar
with a new respect for what these healing modalities can accomplish. Learning to use these alternative approaches can literally be a life-changing experience! $115 (includes continental breakfast, lunch and pm break). This seminar has been approved for 6.5 CEUs for both IAABC and CPDT. Details and entry form can be found at http://www.agilepaws.net/events.html

"Spring National Adoption Event & Beagle Rescue," 10am till 1pm, PetSmart, 3520 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo. Spring National Adoption Event Is Saturday May 2nd 10am till 1 pm at PetSmart® Hillsdale in San Mateo. This spring, thousands of homeless dogs and cats can turn their hearts to thoughts of a forever home during the PetSmart Charities'® Spring National Adoption Event. PetSmart Hillsdale in San Mateo will be part of this annual event aimed at increasing adoptions of homeless or unwanted companion animals. During the event, Northern California Animal Rescue will to showcase our available beagles and small toy breeds. More than 2,000 animal welfare agencies in North America are expected to participate nationwide, with the goal of finding more than 13,200 homeless pets forever homes. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter animal shelters each year, but 3 to 4 million never find homes. In addition, fewer than 20 percent of all pets in U.S. households come from shelters. That means eight out of 10 Pet Parents get their dogs and cats from sources other than shelters or rescue groups, even though many such agencies are filled to capacity with available pets. Not only will prospective Pet Parents receive a great new family member during this event, but Pro Plan is also offering special incentives. All adopters will receive a free bag of Pro Plan food (valued up to $13.99) for their new dog! Additionally, every dog adopter will receive a free "Welcome to Pet Parenthood" guide from PetSmart, which includes information about caring for a new pet. Prospective adopters are encouraged to visit the San Mateo PetSmart store. For more information about Northern California Beagle Rescue, visit our website at NorCalBeagles.com.

July 2010

July is "National Doghouse Repairs" Month

July 4 Hot!

"Independence Day", all day, everywhere. Dogs usually hate fireworks, and Independence Day weekend is one of the busiest of the year for most animal shelters. Get training tips to help you out here.

July 4

"Join the Parade," San Jose. The Alameda Business Association is sponsoring a July 4th parade from Lincoln High School to the Alameda by the Theatre area. Booths will be setup on the Alameda area. Anyone interested in participating in either a dog walk in the parade and/or assisting in the Lincoln Hound Society booth, please contact Co-Chairs Bob Walker at RWalker663@aol.com or (408) 244-2535; or Ed Hodges ehodges@ix.netcom.com. Lissa Schoun of Andy's Pet Shop also invites people with leashed dogs to join her and Ruby the scarlet macaw in the parade.

July 4

"Basset Hound Waddle for Rescue Fourth of July Parade," 10 AM - noon, Novato. Join the Golden Gate Basset Rescue for their annual fundraiser and basset hound promotion event, as part of the City of Novato's Annual Fourth of July Parade! Participants are encouraged to collect pledges and the entry fee goes to benefit basset rescue.   It is a good way to promote basset hounds and promote rescue because it gets dogs and their happy and proud owners out in front of the public.  "Anyone with a friendly, social basset can enter;  if the basset is a rescued dog, so much the better.  If someone wants to participate, but he or she doesn't have a dog, or the dog does not like crowds and commotion or is too young or too old to "waddle", he or she can just come without a dog and volunteer to walk a dog for someone else.  Many of us have more than one dog and can use an extra hand.  There are almost always more than 50 bassets in the parade.  We have a "bring-your-own-lunch" picnic afterward in a nearby park.  The club provides sodas and prepares charcoal for anyone who wants to barbecue something.  There will also be games and prizes." For more information, see the GGBR website or call the City of Novato at 415 898-6425. Special Request from Wag'N'Train client, Fran Madden: "Once again, before our Fourth of July 'Waddle', I’m raising money for Golden Gate Basset Rescue, Inc. (GGBR). This year, I am more motivated than ever to solicit donations because GGBR provided surgery in April for our foster dog, Alice to remove a rare and aggressive tumor from her mouth. Thanks to GGBR, Alice is recovering well and will soon be available for adoption. Without donations from people like you, GGBR wouldn't have been able to afford to do that for Alice, or to provide treatment for the countless other dogs, young and old, who arrive with medical issues that require attention before they can be adopted. Please make a donation by visiting my Firstgiving page: www.firstgiving.com/francesmadden You can donate online with a credit card. All donations are secure and sent directly to Golden Gate Basset Rescue, Inc. by Firstgiving, who will email you a printable record of your donation."

July 4

"Aptos 4th of July Parade, 9 AM, 7701 Soquel Dr. (at State Park Dr.), Aptos (Santa Cruz area). Calling all Great Pyrenees! Great Pyrenees Rescue of Northern California invites all Great Pyrenees and their two-legged friends to join us in marching in the Aptos 4th of July Parade. The pyrs are always a crowd (and Judge) favorite! Then immediately following we'll relax and refuel at our host Don Bowden's mountain cabin retreat nearby for a BBQ lunch and social hour. January 2010

January is National Train Your Dog Month and Shelter Dog Prevention Month

All Month New!

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers Declares January "National Train Your Dog Month!" The APDT announces a new annual campaign to promote the benefits of positive training and socialization to create a healthy relationship between dogs and their owners. Hundreds of thousands of dogs have been turned into animal shelters because their owners didn’t know how to deal with behavior problems and couldn’t find a reliable resource to help them. We, at the APDT, think it is long overdue to dedicate a month where we can bring awareness to the importance of socialization and training, and most of all, to inform the public that training your dog can be simple and fun! The APDT has selected January as the perfect month because, as we all know, so many dogs and puppies are adopted and brought home during the winter holidays. Our desire is to help these new pet parents start off the new year with their newest family member in the best way possible. The APDT is planning a variety of events in January 2010 to celebrate National Train Your Dog Month. It is our hope that the everyday dog owners will visit our Web site, so that they can see how easy and fun training can be, and how patience, consistency and a deeper understanding of their dog’s behavior can lead to happier, healthier and harmonious households. We have a wide range of topics that we’ve covered so that pet owners will recognize themselves & their dogs. We have provided a great deal of information that will help using methods that are kind gentle and that have an emphasis on building your relationships with your dogs. In addition the APDT has more than 5000 members who are willing and able to help dog owners who need help with their dogs. If there is one thing that current television shows about dog training have taught the public its that there are solutions to help dogs with behavior problems and there are alternatives to try before giving up your dog. Our web site content will include contests winners from our membership, downloadable handouts on training, and regular updates on Facebook and Twitter with fun ideas and tips on how to train your dog. APDT members nationwide will help promote the event and focus on bringing awareness to their own home towns. Please join the APDT in celebrating National Train Your Dog Month! See www.trainyourdogmonth.com.
